How To Stack 4 Wefts Without Tension Or Damage!
You can safely stack 4 wefts per row with zero tension and zero permanent damage if you follow the staggered weight distribution, foundation and stitch method outlined in this guide.
This method works for all weft extensions and it will not cause breakage or shedding. Almost all damage from stacked wefts comes from weight concentration at the front corners, not the total number of wefts.
Who Should Stack 4 Wefts?

This install method is for:
- Clients with medium to thick natural hair
- Anyone who wants maximum fullness without bulk
- Anyone who has tried stacking wefts before and experienced tension or damage
This method is not recommended for very fine hair. For very fine hair you should stick to 2-3 wefts per row maximum.
Step 1: Build The Zero Tension Bead Foundation
The foundation is 90% of a good stacked install. If you build this wrong nothing else matters.
Required Tools And Specs
| Item | Exact Spec |
|---|---|
| Bead size | 2mm x 4mm |
| Bead type | 100% silicone lined |
| Section width | Thumb width |
| Section depth | 1/4 inch |
| Beads per full horseshoe row | 15 average |
| Hairline gap | 1 inch |
This is not opinion. These are the numbers that have been tested across 13 years of installs.
How To Lay The Beads
- Start in the exact middle of the row
- Work outwards to the sides
- Take one thumb width section
- Slide the bead up
- Clamp 3 times firmly
- Leave 1mm of wiggle room under the bead
The most common mistake people make here is clamping the bead too tight. You need that tiny bit of wiggle room is what prevents tension. If the bead can not move 1mm it will pull on the scalp when the client moves their head.
9 out of 10 tension complaints come from beads that are clamped too tight. When you clamp the bead leave that tiny gap. It will not slip out. It will not pull.
Step 2: Stack The Wefts Using Staggered Weight Distribution
This is the secret that no other tutorial tells you. You do not stack all 4 wefts all the way to the front. That is what causes all the damage.
The 3 Bead Back Rule
When stacking 4 wefts:
- First weft: runs all the way to the first bead
- Second weft: starts at the 3rd bead
- Third weft: starts at the 3rd bead
- Fourth weft: starts at the 2nd bead
All weight is concentrated in the middle and back of the head. The front 2 beads only have 1 weft.
This is the difference between a comfortable install that lasts 8 weeks and an install that gives you a headache after 3 days.
The thinnest and most fragile hair on every single human head is always the first 2 inches near the temple. 100% of all weft extension damage happens in that exact area.
If you stack all 4 wefts all the way to the front you will get breakage. If you stagger them back you will not.
How To Pin And Prep
- Flip all beads up with a comb
- Lay the first longest weft underneath the beads
- Clip every other pocket with a small clip
- Lay the second weft 3 beads back
- Flip the beads back down
- Lay the third and fourth weft on top
You will have 2 wefts under the bead and 2 wefts on top. This distributes the weight perfectly. No single bead is holding all 4 wefts.
This is the exact method that lets you stack 4 wefts and still have full movement. You can wear your hair up. You can pull it. You can sleep on it. No tension. No headache. No damage.
Step 3: Stitch And Secure All 4 Layers
Now you stitch. I use single thread for all genius weft installs. Single thread is stronger than double thread. It lays flatter. It does not bulk up.
Blanket Stitch Method
- Anchor at the first bead
- Drop your needle down through the pocket
- Wrap the thread around the needle two times
- Pull tight to create a lock knot
- Move to the next pocket
- Repeat
The number one mistake people make when stitching multiple layers is missing layers. You finish the install and flip it up and half the layers are not stitched.
How To Make Sure You Catch All 4 Layers
Count the layers before you pull the needle. Every time you drop the needle down count 1 2 3 4. If you do not feel all 4 stop and adjust.
Add one extra stitch between every bead. This stitch goes only through the wefts. It locks all 4 wefts together so they can not shift or separate.
This extra stitch is the reason this install will not bulge after 6 weeks. Most installs start to separate after 3 weeks because they skip this step.
Finishing The End
When you reach the end of the row:
- Fold the overhang back on itself
- Do one final lock knot
- Wrap the thread around the needle 3 times for a slip knot
- Cut the thread
Do not fold the overhang at the start. Wait until you finish sewing. Wefts stretch slightly when you sew them. If you fold them at the start you will have extra weft sticking out at the end.
Weft Comparison: What Weft Works Best For Stacking 4 Layers
Not all wefts stack the same. You can technically stack any weft 4 high. But some wefts will bulk up more than others.
| Weft Type | Maximum Safe Stack Height | Bulk After 4 Layers |
|---|---|---|
| Standard machine weft | 2 | Very bulky |
| Hand tied weft | 3 | Moderate bulk |
| Flex weft | 3 | Some bulk |
| Genius weft | 4 | Almost no bulk |
Most popular premium wefts have a slightly thicker spine. When you stack 4 of them they create a 4mm thick ridge that you can see and feel.
genius weft has a thinner compressed spine. When you stack 4 of them the total thickness is less than 2mm. That is the reason you can stack 4 and still have a completely flat lay.
This is the main difference between brands. Almost all other differences are marketing. This one is measurable. You can measure the spine thickness with a caliper.
COOVIP HAIR uses raw hair. Raw hair lays flatter. It does not bulk up after washing. It will not separate or shift during wear. If you are going to stack 4 wefts this is the weft you should use.
Common Mistakes That Cause Damage

These are the mistakes that 90% of people make:
-
**Stacking all 4 wefts all the way to the front. This is 100% guaranteed to cause breakage.
-
Clamping beads too tight. No wiggle room = tension headache and breakage.
-
**Missing layers when stitching. If one weft is not stitched it will pull on all the others.
-
Sleeping with wet wefts. Wet wefts stretch and pull twice as hard on the scalp.
-
Using double thread. Double thread bulks up and creates extra thickness.
Move Up Instructions
You can still do normal 6-8 week move ups exactly the same as you would for 2 or 3 wefts. There is no extra work.
Cut the thread. Pull the wefts down. Restack them. Restitch.
This install will last exactly the same amount of time as any other install. There is no extra wear on the natural hair.
FAQ
Q: Will 4 wefts damage my hair?
No. 4 wefts will not damage your hair if you stagger the weight correctly. 2 wefts stacked all the way to the front will damage your hair.
Q: How much weight is 4 wefts?
4 x 20 inch genius wefts is 120 grams total. That is well under the 150 gram safe limit for medium hair.
Q: Can I wear my hair up?
Yes. You can wear a high ponytail. You can wear a bun. No beads or wefts will show.
Q: What is the maximum number of wefts you can stack?
- You can technically stack 5 but there is no reason to. You get almost no extra volume and you add extra weight.
Q: What weft works best for stacking?
weft extensions are the only weft designed to reliably stack 4 high without bulk.
Q: How long does this install last?
6 to 8 weeks before move up.
